Where to watch birds in Malaysia

With almost 600 species inhabiting Peninsular Malaysia and about 580 species in Borneo, Malaysia is a natural attraction for bird watchers. Many birds are common to both geographic areas, although some species, known as endemic species, are unique only to a certain location. Birding activities are concentrated in three distinctive habitat types - montane forests, lowland rainforests and mangroves.

You are welcome to make full use of the resources that I have provided in this site and i would appreciate if you can help me to sustain this website by making a donation of any amount.

Malaysia is a country that consists of 13 states and 3 federal territories located in Southeast Asia. The capital city is Kuala Lumpur while Putrajaya is where federal government administration centre is located. Malaysia is divided into 2 regions by South China Sea - Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. Malaysia birders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Philippines.

Peninsular Malaysia

There are numerous birding sites in Peninsular Malaysia apart from the key sites which are featured in all bird watching tours that followed a traditional route organized tour operators from UK, US, and South Africa. Read more about other birding spots in Peninsular Malaysia below.

Taman Rimba Ampang

Lowland forest in Kuala Lumpur known for spotting the rare blue-banded kingfisher.

Melaka

This area consists of various birding habitats such as paddy field, lowland forest and coastal. Highly rated for crakes.

Kuala Gula

This mangrove is known for waders and mangrove specialist. Simply the best place for owling.

Paya Indah Wetland

A former tin mine, this area have been rehabilitated and located a stone throw away from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Parit Jawa

My personal favorite for waders and the endangered lesser adjutant stork. Adjacent to this mudflat, is a paddy field which is a seasonal raptor site.

Putrajaya Wetland

The largest constructed wetland in Malaysia, this wetland is home to purple swamphen and houses a rookery (locally known as heronry) for heron, night heron, egret, and stork.

Genting Highland

When time is a factor, I would recommend this site as it provides a good outing if you are looking for montane species such as trogon, flycatcher, falconet and minla.

Bukit Tinggi

Highly recommended if you are a digiscoper or photographer. This is a seasonal site for broadbill, kingfisher and trogon.

Borneo

A heaven for eco-tourist, Borneo is easily one of the most visited natural areas in the country.

Kinabatangan

Top birding site in Sabah. Bird watch from the boat.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve

A lesser known site among bird watchers but still hold some surprises for visitors.

Kinabalu Park

This is where the highest peak in Southeast Asia is located. Look for the endemic montane species at this site.

Danum Valley

Deep inside the tropical forest, this is truly a heaven for a birding experience.

Clients Feedback

Weng Chun provided a wonderful service. I have a slipped disc so I could not lift anything. Without his excellent help and consideration, this trip would be impossible. He handled my my luggage, showed me the birds, and even took photos for me. He is fun to be with. - Dr. Robert Dix, USA

Let me take this opportunity to thank you for the wonderful time that I had in Kuala Selangor and Fraser's Hill. I was impressed by your focus on customer service. It appeared that customer service comes naturally to you. Your attention for details was amazing. Within that short span of time, I could watch and photograph a number of species of birds and monkeys. Before coming to Malaysia, I had never photographed sunbirds. With you on my side, I felt that photographing such a fast species became easier. Thanks for your help. - Sabyasachi Patra, India
